What it is
StillPick is an iPhone app by Rivership, an indie studio in Tokyo. It is for people who have a good moment on video, such as a child blowing out candles or a pet mid-jump, and want a still photo of it without pausing frame by frame.
You pick a clip from Photos or Files. StillPick samples the video at regular intervals (about 150 frames per clip, not every frame) and scores each sampled frame: sharpness from focus and motion blur, exposure, and, when a face is detected, whether the eyes are open. The top candidates are listed with a 0 to 100 score and plain reasons such as "Tack sharp", "Eyes open" or "Highlights clipped".
